Orchestra Baobab
Orchestra Baobab
Named after both the rugged beauty of the ‘tree of life’ and the Dakar club that inspired their formation, Orchestra Baobab is one of West Africa’s most iconic bands. Their live shows bring to the stage an uplifting blend of Afro-Cuban, and traditional griot music, sure to get all you Folk by the Oakers on your feet and dancing to their classic tunes!
Formed in 1970 in Dakar, Senegal’s musical heartland, the band’s 1982 album Pirate’s Choice was credited with kickstarting a renewed interest in World Music among some Western audiences, and since reforming in 2001 the band have enjoyed a renewed, and much deserved, international fame.
The Orchestra Baobab of today is as exceptional as ever. Band members new and old continue to bring fresh energy to complement and grow the sound of this powerhouse of West African music.
It’s this incredible sound and their electrifying stage presence that has us so excited to share them with you at Folk by the Oak!
“It is this willingness to consistently push their lush yet imaginative sound forward that stops Orchestra Baobab simply existing as a nostalgia act”
