Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris

Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris The Lost Words on the Acorn Stage at Folk by the Oak 2019.jpg

Unusually for our Acorn Stage we had our audience revelling in the spoken word rather than song with this unique and enlightening double act!

With our 2019 commission, The Lost Words - Spell Songs, we had the opportunity to work with some incredible artists , not least Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris, authors of The Lost Words - A Spell Book, the original inspiration for Spell Songs. Jackie went on to win both the prestigious Cilip Kate Greenaway Medal and The Shadower's Choice Awards for her stunning artwork in this acclaimed book.

From the day we first approached them with the idea of creating a musical companion piece to their remarkable book, Robert and Jackie were enthusiastic and instrumental participants in the creation of Spell Songs, working alongside the artists to provide insight, inspiration and even new material that has raised our commission to heights we never dared dream of.

Having worked so closely with them we became privy to the remarkable wit and warmth that is shared between Robert and Jackie. We were over the moon that both authors agreed to join us at our festival, and that we could share this magic with you at Folk by the Oak.

This talk was as entertaining as it was informative, as humorous as it was inspirational, and proved the perfect 'warm-up' act to the Spell Songs set on the Main Stage!
