Dan Walsh

When you see him live it’s easy to understand why Dan Walsh was nominated for a BBC Folk Awards Best Musician award and is classed as a leading light in melodic clawhammer banjo. Putting what Dan does into words, however, is no easy task!

Dan brings British, Irish and American folk music together with what can only be described as funky grooves – all performed with his unique and dazzling take on clawhammer style banjo.

His incredible performances challenge all preconceptions about his instrument of choice, and his poignant song-writing and lively humour make for truly memorable live shows that wow audiences of all sizes, from intimate seated rooms to huge dancing crowds in festival fields.

Walsh has recorded five albums to much critical acclaim, has a hectic global touring schedule, has released two banjo tablature books, is an in-demand session musician with recent guest appearances with the likes of Ward Thomas, Imelda May, Joss Stone, Seth Lakeman, the Levellers, Duane Eddy, Martin Simpson and even the City of London Sinfonia.

Incredibly he still finds time to be part of collaborations such as the Urban Folk Quartet and duos with Brooks Williams, John Dowling and Alistair Anderson, to teach banjo at Newcastle and Sheffield universities and to feed his passion for outreach work with performances throughout the UK in hospices, hospitals, special needs schools and care homes.

We are thrilled that we can share the simply brilliant talent that is Dan Walsh with you on our Acorn Stage this summer.
